As sick as their relationship was, sometimes I wish my mother loved me even half as much as Norma loved Norman. Knowing your own mother doesn't love you is one of the worst feelings in the world.

I agree. Norma was pretty normal all things considered. My mother has BPD and people tell me oh you should watch Bates Motel, Norma has BPD too! But she's nothing like my mother, she's so much more functional. My mother meant screaming insanity for hours every day, she isn't able to hold down a job, let alone run a hotel, and I've had to take care of her emotionally as far back as I can remember, through her daily rages and suicide threats, as well as her repeated attempts to kill me. She projected all her inner ugliness on me, accusing me of hating her and wanting her dead, while she was always the one who tortured me and tried to kill me.

This is the same reason I couldn't watch it. I only watched the first episode and I couldn't watch anymore because I was afraid of what it would do to my state of mind

Oof. Yeah, can definitely understand that. I'm sorry you've had to deal with a relationship like that in your own life.

I'm glad you've found stuff to like about the show itself (I really liked it, it was a very well-done series), and hopefully you can manage to find a way to enjoy the show without having those real life connections affecting things. But obviously, that'd be far easier said than done. Either way, though, I wish you well, and hope you can find some peace of some sort.
