I can think of a more insane sacrifice... but it's in the New Testament.

Idts, that was more of a test of Abraham's faith than an example of sacrifice for the greater good. God knew how much Abraham loved his son and what all Isaac represented to him (don't forget Abraham had been so desperate for a son that Ishmael was conceived with Hagar the servant woman, because Abe's wife Sarah was way past childbearing age), not to mention the whole "the worst thing for a parent is the loss of a child" thing, and God, being a total dick, wanted to test Abraham's faith so he said "Sacrifice your son for me".
