The first thing that comes to mind is the Kesla sublot in The Banned and the Banished. Story of Your Life might also count, but despite the title, I'm not sure it qualifies as a story rather than a gussied-up thought experiment. Oh, and one of the characters in The Eyes of Kid Midas dies trying and failing to do this.
