I didn't get my morality from my parents either, but I got it from a lot of different places, and most of all, from thinking about everything everyone out there told me about morality, and deciding for myself if I agreed.

I hope it's not true. I'm tired of dealing with whackos who think TV should be politically correct and watered-down because someone, out there, might have no other moral compass in all the fucking world. Even if it is, I'm not giving into them. 132. I sort of understand where you're coming from, but I don't think it has anything to do with not loving real gay men. Think of all the women you know who love to read het stories and romance novels and still don't like heterosexual porn. I really enjoy porn. Straight porn and gay porn. But a lot of women don't like looking at closeup shots of genitals interacting with anuses, mouths, or other genitals under brightly lit conditions, regardless of the genders involved. I think it has a lot to do with how visual your sexuality is.

I haven't been involved in that fandom since the dub came out--I had to take a break from it because of all the people who drove me nuts and then I got distracted by Utena and some other things. I always liked Uranus and Neptune best, but then in 1993 when I was reading it in Nakayoshi and getting the tapes from Koyama Shoten, there wasn't a lot of open dykery like that in anime, and who doesn't like Hotaru? Oh well. Different strokes. :)

119. Torrents? srsly, find them torrents. I don't know anyone who buys things sight unseen. (I still have the entire torrent of House S3 because I can't bring myself to pay $40+ for Tritter, particularly when Chase dates Cameron, but doesn't ever take off his clothes.)

I wouldn't be nearly so cheery about it if it were Quinn. I think I'm one of the five women on the planet who reads those books and doesn't like her. The way she treated Ethan pissed me off a lot. I can't tell you the other reasons, I don't think you're that far along in the story.

I find Quinn entertaining, if not likeable. I think I identify with Miles enough that since he's quite fond of her at this point, it's difficult for me to notice her flaws. You're right, though, she did kind of treat Ethan like a trained monkey.

And I am precisely at the point in Mirror Dance where Mark is in the process of royally fucking up his "rescue operation" on Jackson's Whole. (If, as Bujold has been known to do, she turns it around and has him pull success out of his ass at the last minute, you now know where I am in the book much more precisely than I do.) I haven't read any of the later novels but I think I've read all the preceding.

Er. Well. While I agree with AJ Hall that Quinn was a little overly callous about deciding who got to live or die in "Borders of Infinity" (it had to be done but she was maybe arguably a bit too unbothered by it)--the thing she did that really made me hate her is in "Winterfair Gifts" and you definitely haven't read that yet.

Wait, who's AJ Hall?

And please refresh my memory re: Borders-- it's been a while since I read that one and I'm not sure I have the details down.

AJ Hall wrote all a HP/Vorkosiverse crossover, "Time Shall Not Mend", that kicked off her Draco/Neville epic.

It's been like 10 years since I read "Borders" myself, but they were escaping from a prison camp and Elli had to decide basically which people's lives were worth saving. At the time that AJ said she thought the way Elli went about it was callous, much more so than Bel in a similar situation, I agreed with her--but it's been so long since I read the story I can't really debate it.

The reasons I've disliked Elli have all had to do with the way she handled relationships. Not so much Miles--I fully get why she wouldn't marry Miles, Jesus, that would be miserable for anyone who wasn't prepared for the realities of Barrayar not to mention the advanced case of terminal ADHD. But her treatment of Ethan, and then the thing in "Winterfair Gifts" which cemented it.

I am leery of being too judgemental of a character's actions when escaping a death camp because I do not really know what I would do if I had been in one. But I have been in the position of attending an ex-boyfriend's wedding, and I know I am better behaved than Elli Quinn in that situation.

Ah, right, I've heard of AJ. That was a good fic-- though I read it long enough ago that I've forgotten not only most of what it indirectly taught me about the Vorkosiverse, but when it was set. *grins* I should reread it when I'm through the series.

Aha. Yeah. Okay, I'll watch out for Quinnly bitchiness when I get to "Winterfair Gifts".

Tangential note: I consider him less attention-deficit and more bipolar. It's pretty heavily subtexted in Brothers in Arms, and reasonably obvious before that... although maybe I'm projecting because I have bipolar relatives.

heh. I'm incredibly ADHD. But less than Miles.

Though, seriously, the two are hard to tell apart in extreme cases. The only thing that they had to go on in my case is that I don't actually feel GOOD when I'm wired, and if I take "speed" when I'm sleep deprived it puts me right to sleep. I respond to ADHD meds. So, therefore, I am ADHD.

This is looking suspiciously like that case where one half of a set of twins is schizophrenic and the other half is bipolar (I'm lookin' at you, Mark's paranoia), and hahahahaha subtext with Ivan oh please say it's true. Don't spoil me; I'm having too much fun. *grins*
