Dehydration

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Can someone explain to me how the body uses water/fluids?

Because I have been drinking water all day/every day, I don't eat anything with refined sugars, I don't consume too much salt; in fact I'm a vegetarian so there are a LOT of leafy greens and fruits in my diet.

But my skin is soooo dry, my lips are peeling. And on top of that? MY PEE IS CLEAR. I am talking too clear. It always just looks like I dumped water in the toilet. Why isn't it as yellow as I'd expect it to be, given how very obviously dehydrated I am? Why isn't my body using this?

I'm not a dermatologist or anything but

1) do you have diabetes
2) do you spend a lot of time in a particularly dry environment

This video seems like it would not be related, but it covers dehydration pretty well.

Do you chug water, or periodically sip it?

Are you drinking ice water, or room temp? The latter will go through you fairly quickly.

Your body can only use so much water at once, so unless you're super thirsty, you shouldn't chug.

Also, if the air around you is dry (seasonal change, or desert weather, for example), you'll still need to moisturize the outside of your body.

How much salt are you getting? Because the body needs electrolytes.

Also your skin can be dry even if you're perfectly hydrated, get some lotion/lipbalm.

Could be environmental factors - getting a lot of sun, being in windy or dry locations, etc etc

Try lotioning and using chapstick, plus some spf

If you've lowered your salt intake, you may not be hydrating well on a cellular level. There's a reason sports drinks are salty. Electrolytes.
Could also be an underlying health problem, or your diet restrictions might mean you're missing out on something you need more of.

This.

And you might want to get some chapstick and moisturizer. Water is great but if your skin is really dry it won't help that much.

Moisturize, use chapstick and conditioner, and make sure you’re eating enough fat/calories for your body to make into fat.

Well, a few things.

1. It's entirely possible to drink so much water you're throwing off your balance of electrolytes:

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hyponatremia/basics/definition/con-20031445

I don't know how much salt you're consuming or not consuming and while it's a good idea to only consume it moderation, don't forget - your body NEEDS some amount of salt.

2. The fact that your pee is clear suggests you are not dehydrated.

3. There are many possible reasons for dry skin. Dehydration is one of them, but honestly, you'd have to be really, really dehydrated for it to make that much of a difference. Given what you've said, dehydration does not sound like a likely culprit. You might consider environmental factors like the humidity levels in your environment, whether or not you have a habit of licking your lips which will lead to chapped, peeling lips, whether or not you should start using moisturizers, or if there's an underlying medical condition, such as hypothyroidism:

https://www.endocrineweb.com/conditions/thyroid/hypothyroidism-too-little-thyroid-hormone

And then, if your diet is low in fat... well, like salt, your body NEEDS some fat to function. Low fat, low protein diets can lead to dry skin and dry hair. You've mentioned your diet, but are you certain it's well balanced? Lots of vegetables are great, but they're not the only part of a nutritious diet plan.

I don't think proper hydration is actually a defense against dry skin? I drink a lot of water, too, and I always put on moisturizer after washing my face and put on body lotion after I get out of the shower.

Just get yourself some moisturizer and lip balm.

Dry means lack of sebum because of not enough oils and fats in your diet, not dehydration, you are doing well in that area

Eat more nuts and coconut oil, stuff like that

It worked for me ever since I did that (I'm vegetarian too)

Lips peel because they don't have pores for sebum. We have to moisturize those with lip balms
