111. Um, good for you? I thought the days of epic wanking over Relena were done. Hell, I thought Gundam Wing's fandom was done.

149. FEAR OF THE WORD BB

Srsly people need to LIGHTEN THE FUCK UP. It's just a word! It's all about context, and if I had it my way there wouldn't be any "bad words". The idea of a "bad word" in itself is retarded.

(Anonymous) 2008-06-22 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
But Fandom is are serious business. >: Didn't you get the memo?

Re: 111, 149

(Anonymous) 2008-06-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think people care about it being a ~*~bad word~*~ or whatever. But since you mention context, context is very important. You cannot divorce the word "faggot" from a lot of the cultural connotations it holds. Because to a lot of people it evokes some very, very bad feelings, and that is not their fault.

Re: 111, 149

[identity profile] serenity-winner.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK. I was never one to place much weight on insults. I don't see how taking a word like "faggot" and using it in a context that is not meant to be homophobic or inflammatory is a big deal.

Re: 111, 149

(Anonymous) 2008-06-22 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Who gets to decide what in context it's homophobic/inflammatory? The damage to the word has already been done.

Re: 111, 149

[identity profile] serenity-winner.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I would think it'd be pretty obvious. :|

There's a difference between "lol faggot <3" and "fucking faggot."

Re: 111, 149

(Anonymous) 2008-06-22 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Those really aren't the only two ways the word is used. What about everything that is ambiguous and falls in between terms of endearment and gay bashing?

Re: 111, 149

[identity profile] serenity-winner.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Those were just examples, anyway if you can't tell this sort of thing from context you deserve to get all huffy and offended. It's the same with any other form of sarcasm. People's internet sarcasm detectors fail, people get offended over trifles, life goes on.

I don't care because it's just a word. Get offended over more important things.

Re: 111, 149

(Anonymous) 2008-06-22 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, who's the one getting offended and huffy now?

Seriously, someone doesn't like a word you use. Cry more.

I work at two charity organizations and plan to volunteer for one more. I'm currently training to work at shelters for abused women in children. Are those important enough?

Because I'm still offended.

I wonder why people always say that like it's only possible to care about one thing at once. If that's all you can do, I feel sorry for you.

People who say things are "just words" are usually incredibly ignorant of linguistics, sociology, and psychology. Not to mention completely detached from the real world.

Or maybe you just want to seem edgy, I don't know. Point is, this is the oldest and lamest defense that I've ever seen. Get a new one.

Yeah, I guess that's why you keep coming back, fighting with everyone and then telling them that they are DEFINITELY NOT hurting your feelings?

You stay classy.

Re: 111, 149

[identity profile] simmysim.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
So, in your world, a person can't vocalize a disagreement without equating it directly to their personal self-worth?

Re: 111, 149

(Anonymous) 2008-06-23 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Words are tools that convey meaning. If you grew up hearing your mother and her friend saying "oh you bitch" to each other in a friendly manner, you would get confused when someone said that bitch is derogatory to women, just as if you grew up hearing your father scream that your mother was "a cheating bitch", you would not take kindly to someone saying it a joking manner.

Words aren't "just words" but people do have personal experiences, and therefore differing definitions, of words, and I believe that is the point the OP was making. You should look at the situation and context surrounding any word before casting judgment on the usage of it alone.
