Re: 149
So, to bring it back into society as an acceptable way to refer to a minority as opposed to the offensive way in which most of society usually thinks of it as. That's how I think of it, anyway.
I'm not saying I want to go around calling anyone and everyone a faggot lol because uh. No. But just saying 'well, we can use it, but no one else is allowed' doesn't... actually solve any of the problems surrounding the word. I don't think so, anyway.
Re: 149
There will be a time in the future when the words have been redefined and everyone WILL be able to use them. But for most of them, their histories are still fresh or even still occurring, so that's not right now.
Re: 149
Even if it was suddenly acceptable en masse, I wouldn't find myself saying it.
So... yeah. Good point, well made. XD Something to bear in mind.
I only looked at the other comments after making my one and facepalmed. I'm not bitter over my cruel oppressed position as a straight white person in the first world, honest. :|
Re: 149
But I'm glad that made sense, and explained it a bit more. :)
Re: 149
I sort of agree with you in that I do think that allies can definitely help to reclaim, but the problem is that no one wears their prejudices tattooed on their forehead. I think the issue is a lot more complex than "Gay people can say it and other people can't," but it gets boiled down to that because that's just the easiest way to keep people who are going to be offensive, whether or not they mean to, at bay.
