To have everyone use it in order to reclaim it defeats the whole purpose. The literal definition doesn't really take into account histories. Derogatory terms like "faggot" have been used by the privilege majority to insult and, at times, oppress the minority. The majority has defined the minority in words and in laws. That's why it cannot be included in the reclaiming. That has to be done by that particular minority, in order to redefine themselves and on their own terms.

There will be a time in the future when the words have been redefined and everyone WILL be able to use them. But for most of them, their histories are still fresh or even still occurring, so that's not right now.

Yeah, I didn't think of it that way. To be honest, thinking about it a bit more, I'm completely desensitised to it online on things like 4chan and the like (which doesn't mean I go around throwing it at anything that moves, but seeing it barely gets a reaction, which is probably not a good sign), but offline, I wouldn't think about using it in any context and I'd raise eyebrows (at the very least) toward anyone else who did, no matter what intention they had with it.

Even if it was suddenly acceptable en masse, I wouldn't find myself saying it.

So... yeah. Good point, well made. XD Something to bear in mind.
I only looked at the other comments after making my one and facepalmed. I'm not bitter over my cruel oppressed position as a straight white person in the first world, honest. :|

We're desensitized to a lot of things online. My reaction to use online is different from my reaction to someone using it offline, as well, although I'm at the very least annoyed by both. I guess it's the complimentary aspect of the Anonymous Asshole Theory -- they feel free to say anything and we're not as phased by it because it's the internet.

But I'm glad that made sense, and explained it a bit more. :)
