(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)And yet bizarrely nobody's come up with the next big thing to replace Tumblr and nobody's taken the even bigger step of GASP going back to LiveJournal. It still exists, you know.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)Like, in all seriousness, why do you think that people moved from Livejournal to Tumblr in the first place? It's not like a witch cast a fucking spell that made everyone forget Livejournal existed. People chose to move to Tumblr at a certain point - what do you think the reasons for that actually were?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)In all seriousness, they left because it's easier to reblog than actually make a human connection the way we are now - people actually speaking to each other instead of just reblogging and adding a snarky tag if they're really intrepid.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)Whether or not you like that mode of engagement personally, it is clearly a powerful functionality to have, and it is a way of engaging that people obviously like. And if you're going to talk about social media platforms, I think you have to seriously engage with the choices that people actually make about how they want to interact with each other. Because that's what actually drives peoples' choices IMO.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)Tumblr handles the visual media very well, and that seems to be the bigger part of its functionality. But it leaves me cold. Which is why I spend my fandom time here, in DW.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-01 01:22 am (UTC)(link)But I don't think that preference is anywhere close to universal - if anything, I think it is probably a distinct minority. And if we're talking about why people choose between various social media platforms, and why people adopt Tumblr over Livejournal, I think we have to take that into account. So, to me, the answer to why people use Tumblr instead of going back to Livejournal is pretty clear: because Tumblr works better for them. Even if it doesn't necessarily do so for me.
