It isn't always possible. Sometimes you have to decide how much fandom (or real life) drama you are willing to take in order to follow that one blog that reblogs all of the best posts from the three fandoms you love. Blacklisting certainly helps.

The thing about horrible people is that they look for you and find you even if you don't follow them.

You can block them, but only after they find you and show you how horrible they are. And even then, there's always the anons.

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2017-11-01 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You can block anons.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's nice and all, but it won't work when I'm browsing the tags. Inb4 block people. Yeah, but I still have to read their posts once before I block them.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-10-31 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And heaven forbid some anti or discourse blogger finds your posts through a tag, and you get 200 reblogs overnight from a hornet's nest of shit.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhhhhh. To a certain extent but only like 20%. The thing is, Tumblr is really not designed in such a way as to make it easy to do what you're talking about here. Structurally or in terms of the tools they provide to users. It's a real, legitimate criticism of the site and I don't think it's reasonable to just dismiss it.

Now, I do agree that many people could *improve* their experiences by re-evaluating the way that they use Tumblr. And I definitely agree that people strongly overstate the problems they have with Tumblr, when their real problem is often just that it's 2017 and not 2004. But you can't just ignore the flaws of Tumblr as a platform.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
lolno. It's great you seem to have found decent fandoms but I still have to see shit before I know who to block. Even the blogs I selectively follow start talking about/replying to the drama in fandom so I'm always aware what is going on.

Also there is really no way to block out negativity completely. If you want to search tags for new blogs or info you will always find more shit to wade through. For every person you block two more will appear.

There are some anti blogs that create more blogs so they keep appearing in tags because they know everyone blocked them.

+1

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
My twitter experience is worse. I just follow art blogs and aesthetic blogs on tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What's bad about your Twitter experience?

Oh yeah, twitter is definitely worse. It makes tumblr look manageable.

So basically you have to download all sorts of tools and expansions to make tumblr somewhat bearable. Meh. Tumblr is a hellscape and no amount of blocking or filtering will truly stop you from seeing the shit. Especially since there are so many assholes who WANT to start drama and create multiple accounts, not tagging properly, cross tagging, or whatever else because they want their negativity to get a rise from people.

At least 50% of tumblr's bullshit could be fixed with the option of having posts that can only be seen by mutual followers or private communities for discussion and posts and maybe some mods to make sure everything is copacetic.

LJ might be dead and busted but they did have the right idea as far as privacy goes. It was easier for people to stay in their lanes. Sure, there was still drama but it was a lot more manageable. If people had their own corners for like minded fans then it would erase a lot of the stress of having to share tags and posts with LITERALLY EVERYONE.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree.

But people do enjoy whining.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You with your logic. Don't try to logic people who use Tumblr. If they were good at logic it wouldn't be the shithole that it is to begin with. I unfollowed people because I didn't want to see their shit and eventually I mostly stopped using Tumblr altogether because it's just not worth the negativity.

And yet bizarrely nobody's come up with the next big thing to replace Tumblr and nobody's taken the even bigger step of GASP going back to LiveJournal. It still exists, you know.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Tumblr is a much more powerful social platform than Livejournal and it provides functionality that Livejournal doesn't provide. And no one has come up with real technological innovations that beat out Tumblr yet, is the reason that people haven't moved on to the next big thing.

Like, in all seriousness, why do you think that people moved from Livejournal to Tumblr in the first place? It's not like a witch cast a fucking spell that made everyone forget Livejournal existed. People chose to move to Tumblr at a certain point - what do you think the reasons for that actually were?

Yes, exactly. I've been on tumblr for years now. I don't have any extensions so don't block anyone. I scroll past things I don't care to read. I rarely go into the tags. I'm fairly well-known in my major fandoms and have received exactly one message of anon hate. Like any fandom site, it is what you make it.

I follow people who, as far as I can tell, are largely drama-free, but this doesn't stop me from getting anon and rando drama from people who I'm guessing are searching tags for something to be offended by. But in general, I agree and find Tumblr way less dramariffic than FB, for example.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
you're an absolute moron.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-01 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's not perfect, but unfollowing people certainly helps. I've never been a target of hate, I don't have anon enabled, and I basically bumble along and reblog stuff for giggles.

Sometimes it's hard to avoid social and news issues, because I do care about them, and there's a lot there, but I've had to become more selective there as well because Tumblr is supposed to de-stress me and not make me even more upset about the state of the world.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-01 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
If people would just turn off anon so many of their problems would disappear. Yet they refuse.

Here's the thing, OP. That doesn't work when surfing the tags. And like others have pointed out, you have utilize extensions and tools in order to make Tumblr bearable.

I block people and use my blacklist, but shitty people still make their way into the tags (usually by creating other accounts) and it just gets exhausting a lot of the time.

100 percent agree. There *seems* to be crazy shite on Tumblr, because people here talk about it endlessly, but i've never seen it because...i blacklist, and i take a few minutes to look over a blog before i follow. I've unfollowed a few, too, that started getting into weird or stupid or drama-llama spaces.

I dunno why it's so hard for apparently everybody else.

Blocking doesn't really deal with the little niggling things tho. Like everyone taking phrases and beating them to death ('friendly reminder, full offense, etc.)

There's also tumblr savior and black list and blocking and literally a dozen Stylish extensions to block people and content you don't want to see. It's so easy.
