Are you kidding? They'd be creaming themselves about how "progressive" they are for featuring a plus-sized model had Kenya won. It's the latest trend. Just look how the PR judges have been spraining their arms patting themselves on the back for having plus-sized models. Or at Ashley's heinously undeserved win.

Kenya didn't win because Kenya makes clothes. Lovely, impeccably tailored clothes, but just clothes. Brandon, Kentaro, and Ayana make fashion.

what, to you, is the difference between clothes and fashion?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-03 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Fashion is something aspirational. Neither you nor anyone you know would actually wear that, but it's so cool! Later, a simplified version of it appears in stores for actual people to wear.

Clothes are something you could strip off the model and wear down the street and no one would bat an eye.

If those are separate things, well then, Project Runway has always been about both. We've always had contestants who make wearable stuff, and both kinds of designers can win challenges or even seasons.

I'm not sure who should have one this one given the challenge. But Brandon's outfit was hideous and should not win anything ever.

Nayrt

I'm so damn sick of Brandon and how the judges are in love with everything he does

As a designer myself, I can't figure out Brandon's customer or how he'd simplify his designs for the wholesale average consumer market.

I'm also sick of him and Kentaro winning everything. They can't tailor to save their lives. And their looks are far too complicated and border on video game costumes.

If you're a designer yourself you're probably a pretty bad one because what you said is blatantly untrue. You can dislike what you want, but just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's objectively bad.
And Kentaro didn't even win as often as you pretend.

Ditto. Just hang some random strips off it is so dated.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
You mean couture? Because fashion is bigger than couture.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
All you're doing is talking about the difference between a high concept design and a median design. Haute Couture versus Ready To Wear which some Sportwear falls under versus Bridge/Better versus Budget versus Outlet/Discounter. All of these price points have designers. Yes, including Outlet/Discounter.

Sportswear has 20% high concept. 60% median range for average consumer. And 20% basics such as a tailored jacket or a 5 pocket jean. They are all still fashion.

The stuff on Project Runway should be the top 20% high concept pieces, the things that "early adopters" would wear. The idea of the runway is a "show" and that it's "Editorial." (That's why I hated this week's "Winter Editorial High Concept Look" Brief. Yay? You gave them a season. Tad more specific PLEASE.) Kenya's look is something that an early adopter would wear, not the average person. It was a high concept look. (Margarita on the other hand...)

Having been watching older seasons of PR (ironically while working on my own fashion design portfolio/brand) the earlier seasons the judges were much more embracing of Fashion Design that wasn't just "New York" or "European" style. Now, if someone like Margarita shows a "Miami" style design, she gets mocked. They never mocked Uli. It's sad and frustrating. Because Miami style is just as valid as NYC style.

People would bat an eye if I wore that dress down the street.

people would hit me with a bat if I wore that dress down the street.

TBH I hate this idea. If you design clothing, you should be able to wear it. It's not fucking eye candy, it's clothing. If I can't feasibly wear it, I hate it. Not all fashion is this narrow Avante Garde thing.
