How does one "do" AO3?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I used to post on ff.net YEARS ago, haven't written any fic in a while but have been thinking of starting up again and I'd like to do it on AO3 instead (and possibly also post the better of my old fic there as well.) Apparently there is something to do with invitations if you want to post? Also, is it noticeably different in terms of general use from ff.net? I have been out of the fic loop for a while so the sum total of my knowledge of AO3 is that it's supposed to be the place where the "good" fic writers hang out.

Well, I think invitations are shut down right now. They were getting people signing up to spam.

Right now it's on lockdown due to scammers, but once it's up it is infinitely easier to use than ffnet. Posting fic is much more intuitive and all together, no back and forth with documents bullshit.

Invitations are down right now but it's pretty intuitive to use once you get an account

don't expect to get as many comments though

Maybe it depends on the fandoms? I've been posting nearly all my fics on both FFN and Ao3 for several years now, and I definitely get more traffic/hits on Ao3 (and subsequently more favs/kudos and reviews/comments).

You might as well just stick to FF.net. AO3 has disabled invitations to join the sight because of spam people taking advantage of that (surprise surprise).

This is why AO3 will always be stuck in Beta.

Well firstly get rid of the idea that it's where the "good" fic is because it's definitely not, there's a lot of trash on ao3 just like anywhere else. But once invites are back, yeah, it's a lot cleaner and nicer than ffn ever was. You put in your fic, you pic a rating and tag it. Once they enable invites again, ask here or in other forums you hang out with and someone will give you a code. I give out codes when I have them and see the comments.

Actually nevermind, apparently they disabled the ability to give people codes, http://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/8848 this post has instructions on how to get them when they're back.
