I appreciate a beta who isn't afraid to suggest things, but yes, ultimately it's my story.

I consider all suggestions. Those to which my reaction is "okay, that makes sense" I go along with (which is about 80-90% of the time.) When I do have a really strong "Oh fuck no" reaction, I at least try to discuss with the beta a) why I feel so strongly opposed and b) what led the the beta to make the suggestion. Sometimes it's because something I did earlier in the story gave the beta the wrong impression of where I was going; often once we figure that out, they retract their suggestion.

I too side-eye people who say their beta "forced" them to do something. I feel that they are either a) hiding behind the beta so that they can blame any controversy or story flaws on the beta, or b) ought to list the beta as a co-writer or c) need to get a new fucking beta.
