They can be really satisfying! But it has to be something where... even if I don't care about it personally, it has to be something I can relate to.

The all-time best example to me is the Korrasami reaction videos. Because even though I didn't watch the show, it's nice to see people being so happy.

I enjoyed the first season of Serial... is the second one really that bad? I put off listening to it because the topic didn't grab me as much, but I figured it HAD to be somewhat interesting once you got into it, otherwise why bother?

I think most authors reach the point where they realize that, but I don't think you're giving enough credit to just how insecure writers can be. I don't know any writers who are 100% sure they've done right (and yes, I'm talking original and well-selling authors as well as teenage fanfic authors!). Authors are insecure. When someone waltzes in and tells you can they fix it, sometimes...people listen. Rather than listen to the nagging suspicion in the back of their head that this person is actually wrong.

It would be easier not to fall for it if authors actually had confidence in their work. But that, my friend, is not easy--and many people learn the hard way: yeah, you know, actually, that beta just made my work worse, and I didn't actually agree with the changes, I just went along at the time to keep the peace / maintain friendship / hoping they were right / etc.

I hate the trend in tv shows because within a year it sounds very dated. House mostly used obscure stuff and it didn't always sound like the Top 40s music but the episodes that have well known songs during the montage make those scenes super cringey now.
