I hate the trend in tv shows because within a year it sounds very dated. House mostly used obscure stuff and it didn't always sound like the Top 40s music but the episodes that have well known songs during the montage make those scenes super cringey now.

House also used Hallelujah which is VERY overused.

Agreed. It just comes up so often that it's hard to feel moved by its usage anymore.

I preferred when House used more obscure music, but I didn't mind the more popular ones either. I found them cornier at the time than I do when I rewatch the show now. After a certain point it becomes nostalgic.

But then, I don't mind when shows date themselves wrt music and fashion, so long as they hold up everywhere else.

some of my fics have links to the songs I want used in a particular scene.

Good music never ages.

I think one instance where it works really well is Cold Case. Since every episode is set in a slightly different time period, the music does a really good job of taking you to that time (and place, sometimes).

Yeah, and then means that they can't get permission to use many of the songs on the DVD release and it changes the whole feel of the show. :(

music rights were what held up the Daria dvd release, because MTV apparently had this deal to the effect of "we'll play your music videos if you give us rights to use the songs in our original programming". They ended up replacing most/all with original music because it was cheaper than renegotiating the license would be.

House is a super weird example to use for that, since the music was mostly already "dated," i.e. classic rock or 90s alt rock, at the time the episode aired.

Another medical show, like ER or Scrubs, might have been a better a better example since they tended to use music that was current when the episode aired for iconic scenes. With House, you've got me wondering why you're cringing more at Van Halen or the Rolling Stones or the Lemonheads now than you were 10 years ago.
