I think one instance where it works really well is Cold Case. Since every episode is set in a slightly different time period, the music does a really good job of taking you to that time (and place, sometimes).

Yeah, and then means that they can't get permission to use many of the songs on the DVD release and it changes the whole feel of the show. :(

music rights were what held up the Daria dvd release, because MTV apparently had this deal to the effect of "we'll play your music videos if you give us rights to use the songs in our original programming". They ended up replacing most/all with original music because it was cheaper than renegotiating the license would be.
