Not a trend, in that it's not new, and not dying any time soon. Using really good music that doesn't rely on nostalgia value is key.

Eh. Popular music has always found its way into media but to be fair, it's even more of a thing at the moment - look at the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, the second season of Stranger Things, Mindhunter... It used to be that TV shows didn't rely too heavily on pop music because licensing can get expensive. You rarely got this thing where there'd be one pop song per episode, and a recognizable soundtrack for the series. Instrumentals or original scores were more common, or there'd be a generic 80s sounding track playing on the radio instead of an actual 80s song.

This is actually something that bothered me slightly (and I emphasize slightly) in Guardians of the Galaxy because wow I hated most of those songs. I was especially irritated at having to sit through "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" because I lived through the time that it was constantly on the radio. However, it's not like they were trying to set a serious mood, and I still enjoyed the movie a lot. It's just that the apparent intended dynamic of "Oh wow, listen to all these nostalgic old hits" did not work for me.

It doesn't bother me in Stranger Things though. I honestly think they're more careful about picking the songs, so that they fit the scenes better, but that may just be me. I'll admit I like 80s music a lot more than 70s music.

It's interesting how that dynamic changes depending on the audience, yeah. Like, the target demographic definitely has no memories of Pina Colada as a song that's not an oldie already. And I think that gives the song a certain, like, ironic ridiculousness that the movie takes advantage of - but that feeling might be totally different for you.
