A little rant about Poe's Law

(Anonymous) 2017-11-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
So I have decided that I hate those tumblr blogs that try to mock stereotypical tumblr wackos by pretending to be stereotypical tumblr wackos. Not because I'm offended by them, but because it's near fucking impossible to tell them apart from the real thing.

Like, take this person for example:

https://mlp-fictionkin.tumblr.com/

Obviously a parody? Well, kind of. The fact that they're claiming to be "transage" and "transweight" is a giveaway, but the rest of their blog description? Plausible. I could believe that somewhere on that godforsaken website there's some batshit otherkin genuinely claiming to be a transethnic demi-omnisexual Japanese mermaid.

Then you get to the posts they make,

https://mlp-fictionkin.tumblr.com/post/166644082310/the-metoo-tag-should-include-reverse-rape-its-a

and it's like, okay, I get that you're making fun of the co-opting social justice language and movements to justify acting like an entitled jackass. But here's the problem: it's not immediately recognizable as a parody because PEOPLE ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS SHIT. There are tons of idiots, on tumblr and elsewhere, who really do think that they're oppressed because people don't want to fuck them. Reddit notoriously has an entire community full of such people.

And that is why I hate these stupid fucking "satire" blogs. /rant

Uh, yeah:

"Help me, please. I'm Stalinkin and no one takes me seriously. I tried to get some Ukranians to sit in a makeshift gulag and starve to death, but they wouldn't do it. I know you are very well-educated about this sort of thing, so I think you'll know what to do. "

I think most people would realize these people are trolls if they looked at the blogs for a second, but they just see certain posts and reblog them to get mad, and they get spread around like that as something people really think.

AYRT

See, the Stalinkin thing is another major clue that it's a parody, but you just pinpointed the problem: not all of their posts are like that. It's only certain posts that get spread around. Namely, the plausible ones, like, y'know, that post claiming that been rejected by a potential sexual partner is just as bad as being raped. Which, once again, is a thing that a lot of people seriously believe. Google "incels" if you don't believe me.

If the purpose of these blogs is to make tumblr wackos look ridiculous by exaggerating their beliefs, then you fail the second you make a post that sounds like it could've been made in earnest.

For the life of me, I came out of a movie with the perfect crack headcanon that needed it's own trolling blog, but I realized that manipulating Poe's law would probably make me depressed for the future of humanity.

The endless profusion of this shit is very depressing. Peoples' general lack of capacity for telling when shit is obviously fake is much more so (although I think there's an extent to which, no matter how good your BS detector is, there's a point at which it's going to get overloaded).
