110. THANK YOU. I've been getting cranky about this recently myself because I've been doing a lot of fanart browsing, and--Japanese fanartists are so clear about not wanting their fanart used without their permission. They plaster their desires all over their pages in English. Why is it so goddamn hard to have the common courtesy to say, "Okay, I see you don't want your fanart used this way, I'll respect that"?

tl;dr summarized: No, you DON'T have some kind of divine right to use the work of other people if they don't want you to, no matter how "lol not serious business" your intentions are. At least, not without being a jackass.

I think it's fandom on a whole. People tend to steal things from Japanese artists and repost it other places without a care in the world. English Speaking artists don't have that happen to them as much, although I've seen someone' art on a 4-chan like site and they are American (they found out about it and a big controversy happened). In some fandoms they don't advocate linking to Japanese fanart sites unless you are in locked comm and you can't go to google or yahoo after going there because the site can get caught and locked down.
People still do it and think it's funny, but they will go nuts if an English site is tinkered with.

I think people steal stuff from Japanese artists more often for a couple of reasons:

1) They think that Japanese artists are somehow better by virtue of being Japanese
2) They think that they are less likely to be caught and hounded, or have the artist come after them

1. This is true and sad to the maximum.
2. I always laugh when they get caught because it's stupid to steal anyway. They always repost thinking that no one will recognize it or say anything about it. I don't care if it starts shit, I usually say something.

There's this weird fetishization/othering going on with #1. Japanese fanartists don't exist as fans the way English-speaking fans who participate in LJ/forum/whatever fandom do--they're these amazing fanart-producing machines who exist to provide us with material for unique and speshul icons.

Yeah, I agree. Some fangirls seem to think Japanese people are rather a lot like fairies. Beautiful fairies who make magical art appear out of nowhere and live their lives in funny costumes among sparkles and sakura blossoms.

Incidentally, those fangirls always seem more likely to steal art, maybe because they're usually much younger.

Sadly, it has nothing to do with age. It's just this double-standard, that since these Japanese artists whose works they steal draw as well as professionals it's okay to treat them like pro artists who create canon - just steal and use without even crediting, let alone considering the artists' wishes. Or that it's okay to use them because they found the artwork on 4chan without any source and well, they can't credit or ask for permission this way, haha, nice leeeway isn't it? Fuck them.

In my experience, most of the time people don't even stop to think about what they're doing when they take artworks from a site or upload an artwork to 4chan. And I HATE this because I've seen these Japanese artists, incredibly nice people who are very enthusiastic to meet with foreign fans, getting very hurt and disillusioned; also because you bet that if you tried to use an English-speaking artist's work without permission someone would speak up in her defense.

Hey, OP. I swear to god I could BE YOU. You aren't posting about Naruto-fen, are you? Cause they are awful elitist bitches sometimes (like the girls who created Naruto Doujinshi on LJ.

I am really curious as to who you are--I thought I knew most of the people who have been to Japan and at doujinshi events. Gimme a ping if you know me at all, or even if you don't. Totally shocked to find someone else who knows Jfen.

It bothers me too. The whole muddy legality of doujinshi, I don't think anyone really gets it outside of doujinka. =/

Yeah, I've seen that attitude, although I think it's particularly prevalent in fandoms where there are legal troubles, which is mostly distinct from the issue of English-speaking fans swiping art without crediting/asking permission. Kingdom Hearts is the example that comes to mind--thanks, Disney!Japan.

I link to Japanese (and occasionally Korean) fanart sites a lot, specifically using the banner they themselves designate for the purpose, in the hopes of sharing cool fanart while helping to establish Japanese fanartists as people with sites of their own, rather than anonymous suppliers of the great 4chan machine. If someone who watches my LJ or my communities made a habit of tossing around the art gleaned from such sites, though, I'd probably stop. :/

120. That crap makes my butt itch all the frigging time! That attitude is same kind that makes 'Bystander Effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect)' exist.
I mean, just a couple of weeks ago, some old lady was locked in a stall in the ladies restroom and couldn't get out. So she screamed for help many times and noone helped(Except for me, of course), but when I went for someone to help me pull the door open, they fought I was crazy. Hell! I didn't get any help until almost 10 minutes later.
