Actually, in shows that stick with a single pairing like Gurren-Lagann's SimonXNia won't have shipping wars since no-one takes shipping seriously. Simon was going to stick with Nia, that's all there was to it.

But it won't evolve into a war since no-one takes shipping seriously. There is only one "serious" pairing in the whole show, no-one ever talks seriously about other combinations.

I have no idea on Gurren-Lagann, as I have yet to see any of it, but I beg to differ on the general sentiment. Just because a creator has zero-to-one canon pairings does not mean that people won't take shipping seriously.

As in my response on page 10, I will turn your attention to the history of the Trigun fandom. You see, the Trigun manga has no firmly established canon pairings (and the creator himself has said he's not good at writing romance, planned none for the series). The anime does have one main pair (Milly x Wolfwood) that are *implied* to have done the dirty deed, but beyond that, nothing but highly interpretable stuff.

Despite that, the shipwars got so bad that there were people who were telling people what they were *allowed* and *not allowed* to write, based upon their on subjective views and pairing preferences. This crap was taken so seriously that some people actively harrassed and personally attacked others over it.

Canon means zilch. In fact, the lack of canon romance might actually *inspire* shipwars in some cases.
