144. But with the exception of a few, those women took the initiative to make their lives better and find the man of their dreams. They may not kick ass and take names, but they can be smart, resourceful, brave, and badass in their own ways. Snow White made the best of her shitty situation and whipped her lot in life into shape; so did Cinderella. Belle had a brain and a heart of gold and actually stood up to the incompetent jackass for whom everyone else melted like butter and the giant, hairy, monstrous beast seemingly hellbent on making her miserable. Jasmine fought for her own rights by convincing the king of the whole fucking country that she would marry whomever the hell she wanted and would not be made to settle down like a good girl. Ariel found what she wanted in life and got off her ass to go take it. It is possible to be both a good girl and a badass, and no woman should have to think that she has to do it all on her own to be happy and be taken seriously.

I agree with absolutely everything except the bit about Cinderella. I always thought she was one of the weakest heroines of any story, except for in Ever After, where they actually give her a reason to stay in that horrible life instead of just up and leaving.

But yeah, everything else=Right freaking on.

I don't particularly like Cinderella myself, but presumably she spent most of her life being belittled, talked down to, neglected, abused, and traumatized. I bet you anything she was told "No one else would want you" and "There's nowhere for you to go" and "Do you have any idea how good you have it compared to people who run off from home thinking they can make it on their own?" every other day, and it's surprising she was able to avoid having a nervous breakdown and growing up a terrorized shell of a person. Maybe it never occurred to her that she could just leave. Maybe that never even seemed remotely possible. But she managed to stay sane and positive and found ways to be happy, so I have to give her credit for that.

And she did eventually get out, even if she had someone else's help. But no man is an island; everyone needs help sometimes. That doesn't make her less of a positive role model in my eyes. Some girls do grow up in environments like that, after all.
