I think the OP's point is that GL has no ship wars about what is canon or not, because canon (or lack of canon) is pretty clearly set in stone; canon pairings have either married, declared their love, kissed, etc. People will still have their different shipping preferences and might argue about that, but it will probably never get so bad as some of the wars in the Harry Potter or Avatar fandoms.

For example, the creators of the series have stated themselves that Simon's interest in Yoko was due to youth and lust, and that it didn't go beyond friendship. Simon crushing on Yoko in the first arc is canon, but afterwards he's fallen for Nia, and it's hard to argue against that.

Fair enough... but well...

Now Avatar hasn't finished yet so that only makes sense, but how can people argue what is cannon in Harry Potter at this time due to the epilogue? Many shonen-ai fans, in any series that doesn't express any of their characters to be gay, insist that theirs are cannon or should be regardless of what happens in the show (and in few instances I've seen it vice-versa with het fans). In fact the majority of shipping-wars I've seen ignore the cannon and decide what works better for them. Although the creators decipher what is cannon or not, shipping-wars may still occur. I do understand that with the little cast it creates less of a potential (because HP and Avatar have HUUUGE casts) but it does not deny the fact that those series have their own definable cannon that fandom chooses to ignore. Plus the constant switching around from partner to partner as occurs in both HP and Avatar is much more realistic about human nature (how many crushes, etc do people have IRL before they settle down) I do understand where the OP is coming from but running the course of nature is just as cannon as set in stone rulings.

What might cause less apparent fandom shipping wars however probably comes down to who is particularly interested in the series, which comes from the overall tone and appearance of the story.
