At least you recognize you are one.

Took me a couple of reads to understand that "fan of Twilight" meant the books/movies, not the purple alicorn in the MLP fandom.

Once again people seem to act like being a fan of the show is some horrible thing that means you have deep issues instead of attacking other qualities that might come with it but are more on the nose.

It's a cute, fun show. I see no reason why its bad to have a fandom around this rather than other things. People just act like there's something weird and untouchable about it.

I was always under the impression that Bronies were a self-described group within MLP fandom, who tended to be a bit pushy and engaged in a fair bit of performative masculinity to demonstrate that they're not like those yucky female or teen fans.

Anyone watched that documentary mentioned in the image? (Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony)

yes, I did. it doesn't make bronies look bad at all.

Something I've said before

Bronies make a lot more sense when you realize they appeared during a time when the dominant influence on fantasy fiction was George R.R. Martin. Of course there were people who went for the diametric opposite wherever they could find it.

I know bronies who have never read one word of GRRM.

You're allowed to think something is weird but not bad enough to justify being interfered with. Just not understanding every human choice you encounter doesn't make you a hypocrite.

That said, adult dudes who enjoyed MLP because it was a cute show with good characters and catchy songs and who weren't obsessive entitled creeps tended to back away from the fandom slowly as it became more infested with bad behavior, and stopped wanting to associate themselves with the brony label. Honestly I'm still mad because it's such a fun pun, but nope, the well is poisoned.

Does this really need to be a secret?
Everyone thinks bronies are weird, it ain't that unpopular of an opinion.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
From looking at the other comments, it does seem like an unpopular opinion.

Some Bronies are faintly irritating in the same way that a lot of new fans are - they don't realise that fandoms have existed for decades, and while fanfic, fanvids, art, headcannon, etc., is new to them, plenty of other fans have seen this before. (And no, I don't want to hear about their OC. Ever.) Also, a lot of them have zero respect for collectors of the toys (Gens 1-3), and think we're idiots because we collect toys for cartoons that are, to be fair but blunt, shallow marketing tools with no good message... but that's hardly exclusive to Bronies. In any fandom that's had a reboot or two, there are always going to be fans of a certain iteration that aren't entirely aware or respectful of what's come before or after.

But "fucking weird"? Not particularly. Anyone who's gently perused fandom_wank back in the day can find examples of genuinely odd fans in almost every fandom (snapewives, anyone?), to tar everyone with that same odd brush would make most of us "fucking weird" too.

Live and let live, OP.

I mean, unless you're actively out there telling people to stop bronying, you ain't that hypocritical. You can think people should be able to do Thing while not being a fan of Thing yourself and thinking Thing is weird. That's called tolerance. You aren't required to actively endorse literally everything ever.

I just don't understand how any grown adult finds this show appealing unless they're severely emotionally stunted. I'd be just as weirded out to find out an adult fervently watches Teletubbies or Dora the Explorer. Bronies can attempt to get blood from a turnip with their insistence that the show is more "deep" and "adult" than other kids' shows, but beyond some pop culture references and basic writing 101 themes, it's about as shallow as it gets. It's very clearly a show for kids who aren't able to read yet.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Thank god you're here to correct them. Otherwise they might continue watching a TV show they enjoy, that endlessly repeats that treating people with kindness and respect is a virtue.

the first step is the bravest one, I'm hoping they'll be able to graduate to more mature programs like Spongebob next, and be able to move out of their parent's place soon.
