Haha, I never thought the owners were all that mysterious because most of them hung out on forums with their websites linked in their signatures. But I definitely miss them, and the unique atmosphere in some of them.

I think OP is romanticizing a tad too much with that whole "hidden gems awaiting wayward adventurers" bit. Seriously? These people advertised. They had banners, sometimes giant obnoxious blinking ones that stabbed your eyes, and they had them up all over the place. If you owned a shrine back in the day, people would email you to solicit banner space on your site. And yes, we were all talking on various forums.
