Yeah, it kinda bothers me that fandom’s become more mainstream because I feel like it introduces people who don’t really get where everyone else is coming from or make fanworks a commodity.

I remember a lot of fanlist sites that had some absolutely amazing graphic design. I do miss that form of fannish expression. I assume it's possible to customize tumblr in similar ways, but I don't see much being done in that regard (although I've hardly done an exhaustive search).

I also miss massive LJ icon posts.

I don't miss LOOK AT ALL THESE BLINKING GIFS!! Geocities pages, though. :P

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The blinking gifs of Geocities can't hold a candle to the reaction gifs of tumblr. :/

Haha, I never thought the owners were all that mysterious because most of them hung out on forums with their websites linked in their signatures. But I definitely miss them, and the unique atmosphere in some of them.

I think OP is romanticizing a tad too much with that whole "hidden gems awaiting wayward adventurers" bit. Seriously? These people advertised. They had banners, sometimes giant obnoxious blinking ones that stabbed your eyes, and they had them up all over the place. If you owned a shrine back in the day, people would email you to solicit banner space on your site. And yes, we were all talking on various forums.

I miss fandom shrines too. I was a Pokemon fan and there were a ton of them. I'd visit one, get linked to another one, and spend way too much of my time that way.

Though I'll admit it's easier to find fic now than it was then.

I'm mourning the fact that the ratio of slash compared to het is going down as fanfiction is getting a more mainstream phenomenon. I loved it when fanfic often equaled slash and the natural noun when talking with fans were "her".

Really? In all my fandoms way-back-when, almost all the really huge pairings were het with the occasional slash pairing living its own life parallell to them. I see way more slash than het these days, but I suppose it could just be that we're hanging out in different spaces.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about ratios, but slash used to be way underground.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
When did you start in fandom? I love that slash (and particularly femslash) is so common these days. Slash used to have to go on its own special mailing lists so as not to bother people.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I miss the days when the femslash fandom was (generally) the more chill, positive place to hang - as opposed to the drama that was going on in the het and slash communities. These days, femslashers are just as wanky as anyone though... possibly more so.

When I first got into fandom, it was the early dawn of the internet, and you had to warn for same sex pairings.

Yes, warn. As in, trigger warnings. And even a kiss between same-sex individuals was an immediate "M" rating.

I'm so glad we've left those dark days behind.

If anyone hasn't seen it, check out the Amassment website. It's a fan shrine website and it's perfect!

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2017-11-11 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. It was more fun to stumble across a work or a cache of good fanworks, and now everything is so saturated that people don't even leave comments anymore.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
man, OP, you make me want it back. maybe we can make it happen...

I mean, granted, I think the primary mechanic for killing off fanshrines was the death of the free website host. Geocities, angelfire, etc. Blogs were the first easy replacement but as time has gone on and social media took over, blogs became harder and harder to format to look like a shrine page (and function like one). Or, at least, it's harder to find people putting the effort into making the pretty coding and then sharing it in an easy-to-find place.

but, hey, it's free to make journals and comms here on DW, so even if they're not as easy to customize without some help, maybe that's one way to do it? I'll do it if you do it, anon!

You know what I miss too? Those websites that had literally all information you wanted about a fandom/actor/movie/series. You had pages with episode summaries, lists with random facts about an actor or character, pictures, pictures, pictures, links to videos, magazine scans, news, etc. All in one place created by a like minded fan. Not all over the place like it is these days on social media.

Basically when you got into something new or just wanted to know more about the thing you liked, you could go to this website and learn all about it. It was so easy, and so sweet too because you knew the creator was doing it for themselves/others and not for likes/reblogs. And even if they were known on certain forums, you could still just go to this website without having to associate, follow or get them to friend you.

So much this. I miss well curated fandom spaces. And am hogging the remnants that still exist.

haha oh gee you've reminded me of the days when I would spend tons of time patiently searching for fanpages and webrings of my favorite anime and manga characters/series. Flashbacks of geocities all up in this biz. It was good times, but personally I like having lots of fanworks available to me in centralized locations online. You do you though, different strokes etc. I bet your fanpage is awesome.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think I came into fandom a bit too late to experience shrines (although they do sound really nice!) but I definitely miss the "personality" that older websites used to have, especially fansites. They all look so same-ey, now.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I miss shrines. I miss calling stuff like that shrines. Sure now there are blogs for specific stuff, but shrines just seemed so special.

I remember people using stuff like angelfire, geocities, and bravenet to make their little fansites. I also did it... though mine always looked like shit because I was 13 and very cringey... but it was a lot of fun. I learned a lot about html coding and making themes from those days.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! I miss those fandom buttons so much. It was always fun to search up fanlistings and add your name to the list and collect a button to show on your own blog/page.

Man, OP. I want to be your friend and hang out making shrines and stuff together!
