I'm mourning the fact that the ratio of slash compared to het is going down as fanfiction is getting a more mainstream phenomenon. I loved it when fanfic often equaled slash and the natural noun when talking with fans were "her".

Really? In all my fandoms way-back-when, almost all the really huge pairings were het with the occasional slash pairing living its own life parallell to them. I see way more slash than het these days, but I suppose it could just be that we're hanging out in different spaces.

I don't know about ratios, but slash used to be way underground.

When did you start in fandom? I love that slash (and particularly femslash) is so common these days. Slash used to have to go on its own special mailing lists so as not to bother people.

I miss the days when the femslash fandom was (generally) the more chill, positive place to hang - as opposed to the drama that was going on in the het and slash communities. These days, femslashers are just as wanky as anyone though... possibly more so.

When I first got into fandom, it was the early dawn of the internet, and you had to warn for same sex pairings.

Yes, warn. As in, trigger warnings. And even a kiss between same-sex individuals was an immediate "M" rating.

I'm so glad we've left those dark days behind.
