I...don't remember anything involving him that in any way even referenced sex, or the not-having thereof? I mean, words mean things. You can't just tag any character you dislike as any random insult and expect it to fit them just because you think both the character and the implication of the insult suck. That doesn't make any sense.

On tumblr someone was jokingly making "incel flags" and Kylo Ren was on one of them, so I guess it's not just the OP. I don't understand it either though.

(The other flag was Severus Snape. Even though I'm something of a Snape fan I'll admit that one doesn't come out of nowhere.)

I'd say that "incel" is less about the sex than about a certain kind of performative misogyny, including having a fascism fetish, extreme displays of anger when you don't get what you want, hating family relationships, deifying political strongmen for all the wrong reasons, and having a social network that supports all of the above. It's not the first time that people have noticed similarities between Kylo and toxic masculinist slacktivism.

If we're going all "words have meaning" the phrase "involuntary celibacy" is an oxymoron.

But have they really noticed similarities, or just ascribed them to him because he's the problematictoxic trash male du jour?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-11-12 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Kylo hates his parents, has a violent temper tantrum, is in bed with a fascist movement, and has a shrine to Darth Vader, so there are a few similarities there.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I would call those pretty superficial similarities. They don't have much (if anything) to do with the root of what makes MRAs/incels/whoever else so vile, so it seems somehow in poor taste to compare him to them. Almost like taking advantage of the actual harmful beliefs incels hold in in order to justify disliking (or guilt tripping fans of) an already unlikeable character.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-11-12 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you do you, but Kylo, at least in movie continuity, is a cartoonishly evil villain without much in the way of nuance, so I'm not certain what the issue is in comparing him with some of the more cartoonishly stupid elements of the alt-right.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an issue because he's a cartoonishly evil fictional character in a PG-13 movie, and they're real people who are violent bigots who do actual harm to other real people? It trivializes the harm they do in favor of allowing people to feel smug over their fandom preferences.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-11-12 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a cartoonishly evil space nazi who, on-screen, orders the execution of unarmed prisoners of war, performs torture, and assists in the construction of a weapon of mass destruction. I don't know where you get the idea that PG-13 characters can't be compared to real-world violent bigots, but there we are.

Now if you want to ship Reylo or Kylux, I honestly don't care. Pointing out that Kylo acts a bit like certain alt-right slacktivists isn't a comment on your shipping preferences.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think they "can't be" compared but I do think that people often use such comparisons to convince themselves that real world violent bigots are always cartoonish and obvious, while ignoring scary shit that's actually happening.

"incel" is definitely about the sex. however, I do think there's a lot of overlap between incels and the kind of right-winger who does those other things you listed.
