By relentlessly bitching about These Entitled Little Brats These Days and how Useless And Lazy They All Are and how when they were that age, they had a great job at the factory AND were married with 2 kids AND owned their own house and the Kids These Days just don't want to work for anything because OBVIOUSLY if they would just go out and talk to a few managers, they too could be homeowners supporting a stay home spouse and several kids on a single income by age 25. When that isn't even remotely how it works anymore, and in fact there are several extremely good reasons, not related to "entitlement" or "laziness," why many people under 35 are taking longer to hit the milestones that previous generations deem required steps to "real" adulthood. Chief among them being the terrible, terrible job market which in no wise is the fault of anyone except the older generations who are running it.l

Ah right.

Well, millennials aren't kids anymore. And the younguns coming up behind them appear to be more independent and less focused on their victimhood. Should be interesting to see how millennials react when they're 30, strapped with education debt, and living with their parents, and all the 18-year-olds around them have jobs.

What were you saying about having chips on one's shoulder

I wasn't, but I got popcorn in my microwave for sure.

You sure do have one though.

A lot of millennial are already 30. The oldest ones are 37 and actually quite a lot of them now have jobs and houses and kids.

As someone who is a 'millennial', all this, seriously.

If you think any living generational cohort is sitting comfortably after the collapse of the financial and housing markets, the deconstruction of the government safety net, the erosion of the informal and private sector safety nets, and a health care system in crisis, well, you're just plain wrong and likely an asshole.

Say the same to the ones who can't stop blaming economic misfortune among younger generations on laziness and/or entitlement and/or avocado toast.

I do. In America, race is more important than gender is more important than class for determining your economic prospects.

I don't understand where you're driving with that, in the context of this conversation?

Millennial vs. Boomer conflict is little more than a distraction that gets in the way of real solidarity on key issues like economic and health care reform. Pick just about any issue, and trust me, there are people over the age of 50 and 60 struggling with the same issue.

EDIT: Heck, there are millions struggling with the same issue.

I don't even really disagree. Mostly, I just want older generations to stop bullshitting about Millenial laziness and entitlement.

Sure, I think that's stupid. It's also stupid to flip the script around and blame anyone over the age of 50 for economic problems they share.

My point here is that it's moronic to be blaming those who grew up into the current system, which was run into the ground by the previous generations, for the fact that they're struggling to cope with the world in which they've been landed, or to act like it's their personal faults for not advancing in life as easily and quickly as those who grew up in far more prosperous times.

And my point is that it's moronic to blame my grandparent's class, because they died bankrupt except for minimal government services. Or my parents' class, where we're hoping that death comes quickly because that house you keep harping on is underwater and won't pay more than a year of care.

Oh, sweetie. I don't know where you've been, but no one under the age of 45 came of age in "far more prosperous times." And frankly, if you're not on the upper-middle or higher end of the economic spectrum and white, those "far more prosperous times" you speak of never existed anyway. But hey, if you really want to relive the good old days, most of the factories around here are hiring third shift production workers. What are your thoughts on laminate?

Oh, sweetie. I don't know where you've been, but no one under the age of 45 came of age in "far more prosperous times."

I would argue that someone who came of age between 1991 and 2001 did come of age in meaningfully more prosperous times than the presdent.

The 90s seemed like a good time to me. Too bad I could only experience them as a teenager.
