I think that's fair enough. It's not really any one person's responsibility to sustain a community.

On an unrelated note, what's that image from? She's really pretty.

Do fandom how it works for you OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I read a lot of fic... in other fandoms. If I read too much in my own it actually stifles my ability to pump out stories so nah.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Enjoy yourself OP. Do you. You're in no way obligated to people. They don't like? They can write their own shit.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is perfectly fair. Few people have as much time to devote to fandom as the super fans, so you should only do what you enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I get ya, but you can run the risk of people losing interest in your fics due to non-interaction, but if you don't care, do what you feel most comfortable with, OP. You owe nobody anything, especially in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
OP didn't say they avoid social media or didn't reply to comments. Meta discussion and reading/reviewing aren't the only types of interactions in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but in my experience, until you hit BNF, then a lot of writers stop commenting on your fics when they're not getting responses from you on their, unless it's a big fandom.

Additionally, the OP "I'm only interested in telling mine and receiving praise for it". That's an attitude that's going to show in a moderately sized fandom.

Again, I'm not telling the OP to change a thing - something you seem to want to accuse me of without actually accusing me - I'm just adding a bit of precaution.

This is sort of me as well, in the sense that the fandoms I write for and the fandoms I read in are usually different. I mean, I often read a bunch of stuff when I first get into a fandom, but then stop or slow down a lot once I start writing. Usually I just read in other fandoms then.

IDK, I think some of it is not wanting to cloud up my own writing with ideas from the rest of the fandom?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. For me it's because I second-guess myself too much already, and if I start reading a lot of good fic in the same fandom as my current work in progress, I end up questioning my characterization, my plot, my stylistic choices etc and it's not conducive to actually finishing my fic.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I read and comment in one fandom (big), and write in another (small). I think I might just be terrified of unconsciously putting something that I pulled from someone else's fic into my own. I feel a little guilty not interacting with the fandom I write for, but, eh...

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I can get it though. You do you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sort of the same way, except the BNF part. But in my case I range from disliking other people's meta interpretations to being outright squicked by stuff that involves my ridiculously popular NOTP so... I write. And I post it. And I reply to comments. And I have everything else related to the fandom blacklisted to hell and back.

I know I'm a stupid sensitive little asshole, and reading yet another long meta on why Murder McStabby is secretly a perfect cinnamon roll can do no harm all the murder-stuff doesn't really count because as a Good Guy he has very good reasons for all of it so lets all just... collectively pretend he sent those villains to go live in a farm instead? I'm going to get pissed and spend the next few days typing out angry posts about how Murder McStabby is, in fact, a killer, and then deleting them. Instead of staying in my own lane and typing my own stuff that makes me happy and having Murder McStabby being both a killer and a hero in my fics.

And maybe it's a little too back-patting, but I like to think having a few fic writers who are a little less fandom-incestual is a good thing for fandom. Otherwise you start seeing the same few headcanons popping up over and over and over again and it's nothing but THOR NUMBER ONE POPTART FAN 4EVER THORxPOPTARTS OTP!!!!

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
THOR/Poptarts is still better than anything involving Darcy.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I think you have a good point in your last paragraph. Obviously fandom would suck if every single person was a hermit, but I think it's good to have people in fandom who don't care what the popular headcanons are or who don't feel the need to write in the latest meme or in-joke. I've lost interest in so many fandoms because the fic was all just regurgitated from Tumblr "imagine demisexual Thor not understanding why people love holding hands more than they love poptarts!111111!" posts and it's just not what I'm interested in reading. It's always nice to see authors who think for themselves.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's a level of interaction that's good. Sharing information and love is kind of what fans do and sometimes I see interpretations and headcanons that I like, and sometimes I see ones that I dismiss.

A friend came out of GotG2 going "I'm really impressed how they worked in Drax's family loss there. By having Mantis touch him and see how he reacted as a father to the loss of his family, it gave her a contrast to how Ego feels." And I had not caught that in the slightest, but I really like that interpretation and absent any evidence to the contrary, I'm going to go with it as canon because it makes sense.

And then there's... yeah "THor is DEMISEXUAL and if you don't like it you're wrong and bigoted sorry I don't make the rules :) :) :) "

[personal profile] rhoda 2017-11-13 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's totally fair.

I was the same way when I wrote fic, not interested in reading other people's hot takes. I haven't written in over 10 years but I still don't engage in fandom much.
