Why would it make the story weaker?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Han's dead, so any revelation now means tons of missed opportunities. Their interactions in TFA weren't even meaningfully personal enough to look back on with fond regret.

2. Not every hero should be related to this one family out of the entire damn galaxy. Just. Do. Something. Else.

While I can understand this preference, I kind of think that you might want to look to something other than Star Wars if that's the way that you feel.

I mean.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well Disney themselves just announced they are making a whole new Star Wars trilogy that's not going to have anything to do with the Skywalker family, so I think Star Wars can be the kind of place for this preference after all.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but we're talking about the mainline trilogies right now, every single one of which that's been released so far has been about the Skywalker and/or Solo family.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
1) New people making new movies. They might just realize that retreading old grounds won't work forever.

2) Kylo and Luke and Leia not enough? This is the thing about "not everyone has to be", the story is already quite family-centric.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not necessarily saying they should do it.

I think that, if they do decide to do it, it won't necessarily make the story weaker, especially if it's well-executed. It'll be pretty closely in line with the general themes and execution and stories of Star Wars as a whole. It could be done in a way that was pretty satisfying.

If they decide not to do it, that could be interesting as well.

I'm agnostic.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if they do decide to go for that secret siblings route (more retreading!), it already demonstrates a lack of judgment and preference for obvious choices that would make me skeptical to believe the execution could possibly be good.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But I think you could say basically the same things about The Force Awakens. And The Force Awakens *was* really good and well-executed. At least in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but I find this a terrible argument. The retreading is by far the most common complaint about TFA. It was balanced out by the film's other good points and the audience's nostalgia (and relief that we weren't in prequel territory anymore), but it's already been receiving more backlash in the years since its release due to this flaw, and I think it would be idiotic to stretch the audience's good will further by doing the same thing in subsequent installments. People are excited that Rian Johnson is directing TLJ partly because they're hoping he'll bring something new to the franchise.

Some people won't be happy until everyone in Star Wars is related, like some kind of intergalactic West Virginia.

Yeah, but the rumor is it's gonna be set WAAAAY in the past...like Old Republic era. So OF COURSE it won't be about the Skywalkers.....though people theorize that the Shans are Skywalker ancestors in SOME kind of fashion. How IDK.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
HAN IS NOT DEAD!

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, if you want to keep the door open for Kylo redemption. I thought people didn't want that.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care if he's redeemed or not (okay, maybe a tiny part of me wants him redeemed), but I cannot live in world where Han Solo has fallen to his death... Stabbing aside...

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL I think Harrison Ford can more than live in such a world, which is the bigger problem here. He could not be more done with these characters, to the point where I was even nervous watching Blade Runner 2049. Wonder what the new Indy's gonna be like.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn Harrison Ford.

I could go with a better death scene, though... maybe...

dude, as sad as I was when it happened, this would be such a ridiculous asspull. Sometimes you just have to let people die.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-14 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
No. No, I don't. Not in fiction.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-11-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, you're not writing the script.

I think it would be really cheap if they did that. If main characters can't die and stay dead, then the concept of death in fiction is cheapened.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
You've never heard of fix-it fic, have you?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-11-14 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
lmao what point are you trying to make? That because fix-it fic exists, people aren't allowed to have opinions on how they hope canon goes...?

Having the main series be about the Skywalkers would arguably be in keeping with its saga format, given that sagas are typically multi-generational epics centering on a single family line.

If the story is 'the legend of the Skywalker clan,' then having the story be about the Skywalker clan doesn't weaken it; it furthers its end. I suspect the reason there are off-shoots now is so the universe can be further explored without interrupting that central theme.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
One could argue a space opera where everyone in space belongs to one family is a pretty weak story. But this isn't exactly a new thing...
