I don't mind geeky references, but people can go way overboard with them. On reddit, it wins you upvotes but I've known people who don't seem to realize that real life doesn't work the same way. They're so eager to show off their geek street cred that they don't get that it's maybe not appropriate or funny, or that other people are having a conversation and you're interrupting.
