There's a certain kind of mysterious menace implied by "brooding" that's hard to pull off when you 're having a screaming tantrum. It's why no one refers to fussy two-year olds as brooding.

Kylo has more of a "phantom menace," if you will.

I actually associate "brooding" with whiny, gloomy, dramatic characters who are overly fond of getting wrapped up in their own self-centered thoughts. Not at all mysterious or menacing.

It's cool if that's what you do, but it's not what the term actually means in a literary sense. Self-centered and dramatic? Sure, but they're dignified about it. You're mixing up your romantic heros with your emo kids.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, but is it reasonable to assume that everyone in fandom is using it in the literary sense?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure most of them are? Fanon Kylo is pretty much a cross between Zuko and Angel.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Canon Kylo is a cross between Angelus and JD from Scrubs.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Both of those characters are dorks...

(Anonymous) 2017-11-14 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
And yet they both have more chill than Kylo. Even Zuko has more chill than Kylo Ren. Think on that and despair.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-14 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
That has nothing to do with the point I'm trying to make. The anon I was replying to claimed that Kylo's fans view him as dignified and romantic in his broodiness, and then said the fans viewed him as a cross between two brooding characters who are dorks. Something doesn't add up.

I can picture a sulky teenager as "brooding" without being menacing. The scenes where Kylo is locked in a dark room angsting to himself with Vader's helmet are definitely broody.

You can brood in one part of a film and throw a tantrum in another part.
