Yes, that bugs me too. It's something I associate with stories that may not be true, actually. I'm not saying every time someone does this it's because they're making it up, but if they say something like "So I told the teacher 'screw you!'" and there isn't any more to the story I start wondering if they are... not being literal, at least.
