"I gave a rebuttal" /storyends

(Anonymous) 2017-11-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who finds it annoying when someone tells a story, and says "so I told them (insert rebuttal or WHAM line here)" and then the story just ends?

For instance, a friend will tell you how she was out and someone commented that she was taking too long to order her food. So she turned to them and said "I have short term memory loss." And then the story will just end there. I always want to know what the other person said!

... okay, that wasn't the best example, but does that make any sense? Does it drive anyone else nuts?

Lol maybe she couldn't remember the rest of the story

AYRT - Not a real example, I just meant in general.

I've never had anyone tell me that kind of story in real life. I thought it was just a cliche on sitcoms and stupid cartoons.

They're bad stories in general, IMO. Having them end with a line about how the other person was all like wooooah wouldn't improve them much.

IDK I'm just too cynical about stuff like that I guess

If the person telling you the story is someone you know and the thing happened to them recently, then I don't think the purpose of them telling you is because it's a good story. I think usually they just want to recount it to people they know as a way of, like, processing it. Generally if I have a weird brush with a hostile person, I feel like telling people who are close to me about it afterwards - especially if they were so hostile that I actually felt the need to say something back. And as people who are close me me, it doesn't really seem like that much to ask, that they listen to my crappy story and say a few words on the matter - perhaps about how rude the other person was, or perhaps just what an odd experience it was. That sort of thing.

Yes, that bugs me too. It's something I associate with stories that may not be true, actually. I'm not saying every time someone does this it's because they're making it up, but if they say something like "So I told the teacher 'screw you!'" and there isn't any more to the story I start wondering if they are... not being literal, at least.

AYRT - Good point!

Well, the actual ending probably isn't great.

So, we all stood there awkwardly staring at each other until someone left.

or

So, they finished whatever they were doing in embarrassed silence.

Or, of course, there's the possibility that they had an awesome comeback that makes the storyteller look bad so the storyteller stopped just before that.

I see what you mean. To be fair, the reason why the story ends there is usually that the rest of it was anti climactic, so continuing on like "... and then I picked up my cauliflower for that Indian curry I was planning to make, paid for my groceries and drove home and there was a lot of traffic so I was late."

I'm more bothered by endings that sound entirely contrived (as in the "and then the whole bus clapped" sort of way).
