Eh, I think they immediately complicated it by having Colleen be actually recruiting for the Hand (who she thought were good guys). She didn't want him throwing away his chance by fighting for money in dumb street fights when she was going to (and did!) get him a scholarship with enough to support his family if he just hung on a little longer. She knew he was in a bad position and she knew how to get him out of it, but not if he got himself badly injured or killed fighting for cash.

Not that there's much to defend in this show, but I think you're taking Colleen's comments out of context - she's more like a teacher telling a kid not to drop out of school because things will get better.
