Tumblr is a cesspool of horrible people.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in a low point in my life and I posted about it. Not ten minutes later a few people on anon came into my inbox telling me to kill myself. I feel fortunate to not be suicidal, but is Tumblr always that horrible?

I have watched friends leave left and right after Tumblr put their mental health at risk with incessant hate. Turning off anon doesn't work, people make throwaway accounts to continue harassing!

At this point I hope the site gets nuked. For the few good moments I had there, it is not worth the stress and being attacked for using a wrong gender word or being called racist or ableist for every little thing.

I got called ableist for saying something is nuts.
I got called racist for saying soot made my face black when a fire threatened my neighborhood.

I struggle with depression and am in therapy. It makes me sick that people on Tumblr prowl for people at a low point and send them hateful messages or reblog with hateful things in their commentary. I wish I was bullshitting but I see it happen so much.

Tumblr is irredeemable trash and needs to go.

I'm sorry you've dealt with that.
Let's do some triage here. Disable anon. No more anon messages, ever. They're either going to be trolls or friends who think it's cute to flirt / compliment you without saying who they are. Neither is essential for life: turn them off, NOW.

Second, put your mental health first. Take a break, do some reassessment.
I really do believe it's largely trolls and evil people who attack but tumblr makes it easy. Be careful what you tag. I don't use tags. At least, not real ones. I rarely share any personal information; it's just for shitposting, animals, fandom, fun, some politics...never attacking anyone.

If you have a lot of trolls I'd also rec changing your user name or starting a new tumblr to start fresh and get away from the people ghost following you or who knows what.

And don't be afraid to BLOCK. People don't know they're blocked but they can't message you or see you. And you don't have to see them!

It's awful to say, but I think the terribleness would just travel to a different site. You can go onto any social media site, from facebook to youtube to twitter, and people would still be absolute garbage to each other.

Like you said, people would just create trash accounts to be hateful to others. If they are determined enough to be mean and hurtful, you can bet they'll find a way to do it. Tumblr gets a lot of criticism, but you'd just find a different flavor of bullying elsewhere.

In my experience, you either have to not mention it or block people and turn off anon sometimes. I've had only 1-2 people say something like that to me in my ~7 years on tumblr. You just have to accept that a lot of sick puppies use the site.

On the other hand, there is a wonderfully positive mental health community on the site too, and I can recommend you some happy, mental health-positive blogs if you'd like!

I'm sorry. That's horrible anon.

Tumblr has gotten pretty bad in the last few years. Though since I had my account nuked I've been a fair bit happier since I've been forced to not browse there anymore.

Ugh, I'm sorry that happened :(

I've never been active enough there to receive hate, but just being there and seeing the stuff people say and reblog really screwed with my sense of self-worth. On the one hand, it made me kinda buy into the whole "woe is me, for society hates me and no one but tumblr understands" business. Then, deciding that nearly every little thing I liked - from my taste in food, to my taste in telly - was somehow "wrong." Bad for the world, even. So, obviously, I must renounce my love of said things (and people) in order to be considered "good" and to be liked by anyone.

I feel like that's kinda how a cult works. I'm glad I finally saw it for what it was, 0but I what it's done to so many people I used to know back when they were interesting and unique, instead of the tumblr clones they've become.

I'll definitely be glad when tumblr goes the way of MySpace.

Everybody wants Tumblr to be nuked.
