I'm sorry you're ashamed, OP. There are so many reasons why being part of fandom has been denigrated by larger society when other hobbies are given a pass, and a great many of those reasons are misogynistic at base.

I'm way past being ashamed of my participation in fandom. I have it on my resumé that I volunteered for Systems at the OTW for 4.5 years.
