How can writers know when the bookmark is intended as a compliment if some people use bookmarks just to keep track of fics they think they might want to read?

1. There is an honest-to-god "Mark for Later" button on AO3 that creates a subcategory in your history of "fics I intend to read later." Why would you use the bookmark function for that?

2. Even if someone is using the bookmark function that way, "Your fic looks so interesting that I'm going to save it somewhere specifically so I can read it later" is considered to be compliment by most people.

Fic writers who complain that people flatter them wrong and then wonder why they don't get more compliments are the worst.

I have no idea why someone would use the bookmark function that way, but that's what the anon I was referring to said that they do. In fact, they said that that's pretty much all that they use the bookmark feature for.

I don't intend it as a compliment when I save someone's fic for later. The vast majority of the fics I read end up being completely crap; all that saving a fic for later means is that it had a vaguely interesting premise and the summary was more substantial than "i suck at summaries plz read and review." That's hardly high praise, so why should the writers whose fics I save for later be expected to take it as such?

So you suck and that means everyone sucks as much as you. Got it.

If not expecting authors to be grateful that I clicked their fic and actually leaving a comment when I like a fic means that I suck, then sure. Whatever makes you feel better.
