I DEFINITELY feel this, on some levels. A fair number of people IRL know that I'm into fannish stuff, and there are some people that I've told who don't know what it is and I've explained it to them, but I very very rarely tell people that I write fanfic, and usually don't mention reading it unless I'm explaining Why It Is A Valid Form Of Writing.

At the beginning of this school year, the second time my mom and I met my new teacher, he asked what I'd read over the summer (after I said I was into that), and I faked a laugh and said that I hadn't been reading at the same time as my mom started to say fanfic, at which point I'm pretty sure I jabbed her in the ribs with my elbow. That was pretty humiliating, because as much as I try not to be ashamed, if I tell anyone who doesn't seem like they know what it is -- especially adults (I'm seventeen) and people who I'm going to be in regular contact with over a long period of time -- I usually go into the spiel about what it is, basically to assure people (without using the words) that it's not just porn and/or slash and/or rpf about boy bands. Not that I think there's anything wrong with that at all -- it's just the worry that people will look at me and think "oh one of those dumb teenage girls obsessed with The Gays and such". And I haven't brought it up with my teacher since -- I'm not even sure he heard my mom -- but I still feel vaguely sick whenever I remember it. I don't want to be this ashamed, but fuck, I really am.

Yeah, it's dumb. But anyway. That's been my experience.
