Old Fic

(Anonymous) 2017-11-17 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I've been reading a bunch of old X-Files fic lately and it's *such* a trip. There's something like... not quite innocent, but maybe un-selfconscious about it? Like, with fic now, we have all these ideas about cliches and tropes and standards and things like that. It's kind of refreshing to go back to fic from a time when no one cared about any of that.

Has anyone else gone back to read older fanfic? How did it hold up?

I read old stuff all the time. It usually disappoints me. :(

I recently read a Luke/Han fic circa 2001 and really loved it. It felt much more like reading a novel than fanfic.

I'm pretty sure I've scoured the entire internet for every existing Sam/Vala (SG-1) fic, and other assorted 'Gate femslash. It's usually pretty awesome :) Also interesting to come across older, pre-lj, pre-a03 sites for hosting it. They always look so cool and unique. I'm kinda fascinated by "old" fandom.

I've read a huge amount of XF fic, and I actually find a lot of it to be well above the average fanfic standard I'm used to. More plots, more complex plots, more commitment to keeping the plot-development consistent from beginning to end, deeper and more nuanced exploration of the characters and their experiences, etc.

I love modern fanfic, 100%. But I love XF fanfic 100%, and there are things about it I just can't get in any of my current fandoms and that I miss immensely.
