Why are fannish people so often a pool of mysery?

I've spent over ten years in this game, and I don't get it. It's like enjoying sci-fi and fantasy somehow = getting off on feeling sorry for yourself, and having free reign to say whatever hateful things you like about literally anybody, just because they haven't met your almighty standards.
