Do they not watch the actual series or something? I never watched it regularly, but I had to stop watching at all a long time ago because I thought the jokes about both of those themes went too far.

People woobifying Dennis Reynolds has to be the weirdest thing I've witnessed in my decade plus on the skirts of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
it freaks me out SO MUCH

I don’t watch this show, but I see quotes from it sometimes. Is woobifying Dennis more or less OOC than woobifying Cartman from South Park?

I don't watch enough South Park to know for sure, but Dennis isn't a child (like Cartman); he's a fully grown adult who brags about plans to rape women, routinely threatens the safety of random women to fuck them, is heavily implied to regularly rape women, tries to have sex with underage girls, thinks he's God, and has no respect for any human alive besides himself. Those aren't My Takes; those are his literal self-stated character traits.

Literally one of the most famous scenes from the show (if you've ever heard people say "because of the implication," it's from Always Sunny) is Dennis explaining his plan to get women in a situation where they can't turn him down for sex without risking getting murdered, and therefore he won't "have" to rape them, because they'll say yes, in the knowledge that if they say no, he will murder them.

Wow. I'm all for dark and edgy humor but I don't think I could watch a comedy show with that character. (Not trying to offend people who do watch it though.)

It's all genuinely hilarious, but then you take his actions in context of like being a woman he's interested in and holy shit.

It's a very dark humor kind of show. Very dark. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but it's very much understood that the bad things the characters do are bad and that you're supposed to be pleased when their terrible actions blow up in their faces. The implication scene is imo a really important and valuable piece of television because it explains something that a lot of people refuse to acknowledge in very clear terms (there are a terrifying number of people out there who insist that sexual coercion which never moves into the realm of physical violence doesn't "count" as rape) and makes it extremely plain that it's reprehensible and does in fact "count." The show writers/stars all seem to be really nice people irl so the horrible shit their characters get up to is definitely not supposed to be sympathetic.

OK, that helps me understand it more. Thanks.

It is definitely a show about awful assholes.

It's funny, but it's clear that they're all dickbags.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
If you saw it in context, it's actually a pretty brilliant take down of rape culture. The show frames it as being horrible.

holy.... shit. i know that a couple people i follow passively hate this show, but the only things i've seen about it specifically was a post about racism; i haven't heard anything about this.

there's this one person i follow that makes all these cutesy posts about their ship from the show, and i never paid much attention because i don't watch it, but i'm pretty sure dennis is one of the characters in the ship, and this kinda puts it in a really different light.

like, oh man, i'm adamantly against censorship and policing what people watch, because i understand that people can like problematic things, but it makes me a little sick to think about how fucking cutesy those ship posts were...

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The ship is pretty cute, though. Codependent and not very healthy, but the guys do have a cute relationship

Ditto. I love this show to death, and I love the characters, but I HATE that so much of the fandom woobifies Dennis and have nothing to do with it because of that. He is canonically a rapist and sociopath yet people write him like he's just some poor misunderstood guy. The gang is funny BECAUSE they're horrible. I feel like I'm not even watching the same show as the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oof. What show are these people watching?

I enjoy the show despite normally hating that kind of thing, but that does make me glad I'm not in the fandom. I've got no patience for woobifying Dennis. Any of the others, I could handle some degree of woobifying for, their lives do suck and while it's usually their own fault, eh...

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, this is the kind of stuff that would happen in any fandom nowadays.
