... despite the fact that most actual careers that involve art now- for commercials, video games, cartoons, etc- are embracing a more anime-like drawing style, or at the very least incorperating ideas and little details from it? And when there are even American-made "animes" on TV and "mangas" on the shelves?

Seriously, this argument is so patently ridiculous whenever I see it, I can hardly believe it.

by "serious" i don't mean commercially successful. i mean RESPECTED.

And I don't get why that argument makes any more sense? Why would someone care about having ~Internet Respect~ from... people who happen not to like the drawing style they do (which will happen with many drawing styles, sorry to say)? Rather than that, they should just draw what they enjoy drawing, if they're just in it for the fun of it. And if they're in it for the fun and wanting to make something of themselves with an art career, the fact remains that the anime style will still come in handy for them. So I have no idea where the respect you're deeming so important should be coming from. Elitists who assume that a valid art style isn't respectable for some reason, despite it gaining more and more "respect" in mainstream circles? No thanks.

i don't think you're getting my point. i'm not after internet respect -- i would, however, like the respect of my friends (who like my art but pretty much laugh it off, because it's anime). also, i am SO SICK of people telling me "OOOH LOOK AT YOUR CUTE ANIME ART." it makes me feel like people will look at it, expect some cliche shojo plot or whatever, and pass it over entirely. i guess i'm just frustrated that my style, thanks to learning through manga, no longer matches the type of comics i want to portray!

i DO draw for myself, which is why i continue to draw (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/petmilk/twelvesteps) despite not being an art student and never planning on profiting. however, i would like people to stop rolling their eyes whenever they see my art! ok, roll your eyes because it's amateur and poorly done, but not because it's manga-esque. :[

there's also the angle of me wanting to have a more original style, but that's another story entirely.

See, that I can sorta understand- but again, if your friends laugh off your art just because it's an anime style, they're not being fair to you. It's not because of your drawing style, it's because they have these set ideas about the style that are inaccurate. Maybe some people will look at it and go "OH, ANIME, PFFT" but these are the people that think cartoons are for little kids- they obviously don't get that it's a drawing style that accompanies all kinds of plot. (You want an example of shoujo-turned-dark, look at Higurashi!) Your style can match the type of comics you want to portray, and it's really not your fault or the style's fault that a lot of people still don't seem to get it.

It's good that you draw for your own fun, and if you want to draw a certain way (more original, less anime-y), that's great- I hope you do well at it. But again, there will be those people that roll their eyes at it just because it's anime- but why should you be catering to even your friends' beliefs about what makes "serious" art?

Seriously, draw something like this (http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x243/nick-ian/higurashi_bloodyhandcopy.jpg) and see if they still expect cliche shoujo out of you. >3 There are ways around it, and you shouldn't feel like you have to bend your preferred style just to get people to take you seriously- again, if you do want to change your style for your own reasons, yes, but to please other people- that's a bad idea. Ehhh.. that's debatable. Yes, anime has become more commonplace in American entertainment than it was years ago, but that doesn't mean that it's in the majority when it comes to careers in art, not by a long-shot. A lot of publishing companies and gaming/movie studios don't want to see a portfolio full of anime (or a portfolio full of just disney-style art, for that matter); they want to see that you can handle a variety of styles and subject matters. Anime can be amazingly done and amazingly executed and I respect it when it's well crafted, but anime can also be a stylistic crutch if the artist doesn't study or understand the basic foundations of art and drawing. It all depends on what you want to do with your art, whether or not you want to a career doing art, and what sort of work you want to do. There most certainly are jobs available for those who work in an anime style. But it's a competitive market, and if you want a better chance at a serious career you'll have more luck finding work if you can handle more than just drawing anime characters, because I can tell you from experience that a lot companies and studios are looking for more than that.

Ahh, that's true. If you're wanting to get into an artistic career, you really do need a few different things to offer, and that's fine. It's not that anything anime automatically is good, or that just because it's more popular now doesn't mean the person should use it, as you said, as a crutch. Mostly I was just trying to say that, when you see more and more of anime styles and anime-influenced styles out there, to say "DON'T DRAW ANIME STYLE, NO ONE WILL RESPECT YOU!!!" is kind of ridiculous. It seems like an extreme in the other direction from using it as a crutch.

So... not trying to say they should start going "BWAHAHA ANIME IS ALL I NEED, NOW >D" But it's hardly a taboo thing among the people who would be looking at the portfolios if they DO want to draw professionally, and if they're just doing it for fun instead, well, people "respecting" their drawing style shouldn't enter into it, amirite? ;)
