I mean - it's difficult to write a character *in* character (and do it well) when a) you didn't originally write that character, b) you may not like or agree with some of the traits/decisions the writers have given that character and c) are trying to fit that character into a plot that the writers never intended or planned for, which makes the whole in character writing even *harder*.

So fuck that noise of people saying fanfic writing is 'easy' because the characters are already made up.

ah alright then, agreed.

(I recently wrote for a fandom that has a large and convoluted, not always consistent lore, and it was both frustrating and exhilarating to weave all the little pieces together, And keep everyone in character, while trying to tell a coherent story. It's like trying to play chess and solve a Rubik's cube while doing a slalom race with your head on fire.

Heeeeeee!
That's a good description. :)

Canon with bad or *no* continuity (or self-contradictory continuity) sucks so hard.

DA

And that's when you end up with fanon/"this is the true depiction of X character, as written in XYZ fic"

And what really sucks about that is when
a) you actually feel like this characterization is perfct & you know the character won't be as developed in the actual media OR
b) it's a complete about face from the character, but everyone runs with it, thus contaminating the any fic you might have enjoyed
