Like, once where a dude had canon relationships with both a woman and a man, and the majority of the fans insisted that he was gay and the woman was just for show, and the actor had to confirm that no, he was bi and he genuinely loved her. And once where he had a few relationships with guys in a row and everyone assumed he was gay even though he never actually said he was, and later it turned out he actually liked girls too, just not as much or as frequently as guys.
But yeah, I agree with you. It depends on the character. Some canon gay characters seem like they could possibly be bi, and others, they're definitely gay and there's absolutely no way they're bi.
