OP said they give leeway when the author is trying to make commentary on gender roles.

Yes? They view certain authors less critically under certain circumstances.

DA but "slightly less annoyed" is still pretty much disgusted with the existence of something that I, a lesbian, write to feel empowered. Because pretending everything is okay isn't nearly as empowering to write than someone breaking the norms down.

You can find something annoying without being disgusted that it's allowed to exist. Everyone's allowed to have preferences. Doesn't mean you don't recognize that other people can different tastes.
