Just read the article and I have two comments:
I do not find the rock "profoundly charming".
Mel Gibson won and he's a bigot motherfucker too. I'm surprised the otherwise smart article didn't mention this.

Gibson won in the 80's, and didn't become known for his bullshit until the late 2000s.

um, I remember him saying nasty things about gays and any woman who used birth control in the 80's....

I'm sure he was always a garbage person, but I'd be shocked if these things were widely known in 1985 when he won. And to be honest, I'd be shocked if a lot of people back then would have even cared, being that this was the 80's. Even now, sources for Gibson's in-media shit only traces back as far as 90's interviews.

I'm sure the publicists tried to hide his views well. I didn't hear about any of them until 1996 and after.

People were fyxkin bigots in the 80s (well now, too), his bigotry wasn't standing out/people didn't have platforms to build backlash

He had pretty standard homophobia for the 80s, and while his birth control views weren't mainstream, they weren't that far off. /old person
