Then again, by this point male characters can have actual love confessions to each other and people still call it not canon enough and baiting.

I wouldn't say baiting but it is pretty crappy to keep getting hit with the "But not too gay" trope. Where all the straight couples are making out, dating, shown in compromising positions, etc...but the most any LGBT people can hope for is holding hands, a kiss on the cheek, or the most shocking thing of all, a hug. And that's if it ever goes beyond them just saying the characters are gay/bi/etc.
