It’s ambiguous if he was even racist, the actor said he didn’t play it that way.

I didn't feel like it was obvious that his problem with Luke was being racist, but I was waiting for...any other explanation.

Me too. I could theoretically buy that he had some other reason but nobody presented one.

Same. I thought he hated Lucas because he was the one Max specifically spend with - like it it had gradUation or Mike or Will, he'd target them in the same way.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was particularly ambiguous. His threats to Max about not hanging out with Lucas sounded exactly like racists who want to discriminate against black people without saying the actual words.

This. ^

yep

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say it was ambiguous in that it wasn't definitive. That's not to say it was supposed to be this super subtle thing that only a few clever viewers picked up on. I'm sure we were meant to think he was probably being racist - we just weren't meant to know for certain.

Yes. Lucas is a good kid. He's polite, friendly, and bright. There's literally no reason to object to him other than his race.

Yeah like Valkyrie from Thor sold people into slavery, being a jerkass is small fries

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, thank you for the Thor spoiler in the Stranger Things thread. I was hoping for that to happen.

I just felt like he didn't do anything to make me want him redeemed. I do feel bad that he had an abusive father but everything he did to everybody else was horrible. I wanted him to be eaten. If he had tried to protect Max instead of only looking for her because his father made him do it I might have more sympathy.

(But if they redeem him I'm OK with it.)

At this point I am just not a fan, it's sad that his dad is an even worse piece of shit but he is being abusive towards his little sister and frankly my sympathy ends with that. She's a kid and does not deserve any of that, I don't care how crappy his life is.

Like they are going to have to do a hell of a lot of work for me to buy a redemption arc with him if they go there.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it is his step-sister (who he doesn't seem to have known long) that also seems to be the reason they had to leave California. And I am not excusing the behavior but abuse is a circle.

I guess the question isn't if he can be redeemed or not, as I'm sure the showrunners will find a way, it's "do I actually care?". There was nothing about him that was even remotely likeable. I hated it every time he was on screen. I certainly don't want to see more of him if I don't have to, and a redemption arc would give him more screen time.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I loved watching him on screen but I love assholes, so.

His eyelashes are remotely likeable. I swear, they were all I could look at any time he got a close-up shot.

I want him redeemed because he has amazing eyelashes.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I can't even consider him being redeemed.

Because it really reminded me of my relationship with my brother, minus his Freudian excuse (my dad didn't abuse my brother), and minus the huge age gap.

Even if he never hurts her, there's a huge aspect of fear in that relationship. And that fear never goes away, even when you grow up.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
He was supposed to be the Ace Merrill, a human boogeyman to make things worse while the really scary shit was going down. I don't think they plan on redeeming him.

An explanation is not an excuse, nor is it a path to redemption.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this and it makes perfect sense to me - bullies get bullied. This is so consistant a chain of events that I could almost call it proven by science

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone who is abused or bullied ends up being abusive or a bully themselves. It's not set in stone and it's a shitty thing to keep repeating as if it is.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-25 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that he is unredeemable... but I also doubt that they will go that direction.
I don't care either way
