except maybe zombies, because they reached such a saturation point and became so much a part of the fucking furniture that i managed to ignore them as just so much wallpaper

With you on the zombies. I remember playing the first Resident Evil when I was 8 and having nightmares for weeeeks about them. Now they're so overdone they're almost comical.
